Submit DIY experiment

If you would like to submit an experimental procedure to be posted on this website you can do so by emailing it to The experiments submitted must be able to be performed at home, using equipment and chemicals which can be easily obtained. Experiments will not be rejected for being potentially dangerous, but a red banner will be displayed above the post informing the reader that extreme care has to be taken. Experiments submitted also must contain the following:

A brief summary of the DIY experiment including, but not limited to the scientific background of the experiment, goals of the experiment and a brief description of the methods used.

Introduction to topic / experimental background

Provide a description of the research question. What is the experiment or study attempting to demonstrate? What phenomena are you studying? Provide a brief history of your topic and explain how it relates to this experiment. Remember to think of the kind of person who will be performing your experiment. Do not make it overly complicated nor too simple, but also do not be afraid to talk about cutting edge scientific research.

Materials and Equipment

A bullet point list of all the equipment and chemicals needed to perform the experiment. When listing chemicals remember to put the household name in brackets next to them as shown in the example below.

  • NaOH (lye)
  • NaCl (table salt)
  • Isopropanol (rubbing alcohol)

Experimental Procedure

A bullet point, step-by-step list explaining how to perform the experiment. It must be sufficiently detailed so that anyone can read this section and duplicate your experiment.  It may be helpful to provide a diagram of your experimental setup.

Self explanatory, really.

Video (optional)

If you would like to contain a video of yourself performing the experiment simply include  the link in your submission. All videos will be checked before being posted and only videos uploaded to Youtube or BlipTv will be accepted. The best advice I can give you to make an interesting video is to prepare your equipment and your script before you switch on the camera.

Pictures (optional)

If you would like your post to contain any pictures you will need to send the link/file when you submit the experiment. State clearly in your email where you would like the image to be placed. Don’t worry about designing a banner for your post as that will be done at our end to ensure consistency on the website.

I look forward to reading your submissions :)
