Will GMOs Kill Us All? – Skeptics in the Pub Talk

For decades now, we have been told by organisations like Greenpeace, GM-Freeze, and Friends of the Earth that genetical modified (GM) food is dangerous and has been shown to be harmful to humans. They have done a great job at convincing the population of their dangers by quoting scientific literature that claims GM-food has been shown, among other things, to cause cancer, leukaemia, and stomach inflammation; but is there really any truth to this? What do the papers these organisations are promoting really say, and do they have any flaws? Or, in actual fact, are GMOs going to kill us all?

In this talk I critique several highly referenced anti-GM papers, looking past their veneer of good science, and discovering what they really say about GMOs and the people who promote them.

  1. Hi ! I am an Organic farmer, living in India. We have GM Mustard being introduced by the Govt of India. Anti GMO activists are up in arms. Every time i ask them (the anti GMO people) about credible research which links GMOs to cancer etc., they always forward the all too similar posts we all have seen, including the rats with tumors.

Mustard has been grown in north of India for generations, its a winter crop, and we use its leaves to make ‘sarson ka saag’ and its seeds are used for oil and as a condiment.

My ONLY problem with GM mustard is that it is designed to be an HT crop! Farmers here are lazy, we have destroyed our soil with unrelenting usage of pesticides and round-ups. Huge number of people depend on the daily wages they get by picking weeds from the fields. Introducing another HT crop will given the farmers further license to spray round-up in yet another crop!

My second problem will be the terminator technology. Which, interestingly, you said “Does not exist” ! This is something i need to understand from you in detail. We have led to believe that the GM Mustard also contains the terminator seed. It happened with monsanto’s BT cotton, and farmers are forced to buy seeds every year.

If there is not terminator technology, then why the seeds cannot be stored? is it a myth? or is it because its a F1 hybrid which wont breed true the next year? Please explain..
